In my studying and performing of (rotational) hitting mechanics, it seems my weight at the end of the swing is either directly back at center OR slightly in my back quad -- as if the weight would extend out of my knee and straight to the ground... not through my shin and into my ankle/foot.

Kate,

The key statement you make is "at the end of my swing". After energy is depleated your weight will settle back onto your rear leg. At the contact position your momentum of the swing will take your weight against your front leg, making your back leg feel like there is nothing on it, the toe will drag forward or in some cases come off of the ground and move forward.
